Hugh Jackman Then and Now: The Childhood of “Wolverine”

1. Hugh Jackman: The early age

Hugh Michael Jackman was born on October 12, 1968 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. His father was Christopher John Jackman, an accountant trained at Cambridge and his mother was housewife Grace McNeil. His parents were British and came to Australia in 1967 as a part of “Ten Pound Poms” immigrant.

Jackman endured a difficult childhood when his parents divorced when he was eight. Then Jackman stayed in Australia with his father and two brothers, while his mother moved back to England with Jackman’s two sisters.

As a child, Jackman enjoyed outdoor activities. Therefore, he often spent time on the beach, camping, and school holidays in Australia. He wanted to see the whole world: “I used to decide that I wanted to be a chef on the plane. Because I was on a plane and there was food on board, so I thought there was a cook. I think it would be an ideal job.”

 

2. Hugh Jackman: The journey of acting career

Jackman went to primary Pymble Public School and then attended Knox Grammar School for boys in Sydney. After high school, he took a year off to work as a physical education teacher at Uppingham School in the UK before returning to Australia to study Communication at the University of Technology Sydney. During his final year in university, he took an drama course to create additional credits. Drama courses made his motivation stronger. The class then performed The Memorandum of Václav Havel which was directed by Jackman. 

After achieving his BA degree, Jackman completed the 1-year course “The Journey” at the Actors’ Centre in Sydney. Next, he was offered a role in a famous opera play “Neighbors”. However, instead of accepting it, he decided to continue studying at Western Australia Art Institute of Edith Cowan University and then graduated in 1994.

In 1995, during a performance at the academy’s graduation ceremony, Jackman received a phone call inviting him to take on a role in the movie Correlli. The film, written by actor Denise Roberts, marked the beginning of Hugh Jackman’s career as a professional actor. And thanks to this film, he had the opportunity to meet his future wife, Deborra-Lee Furness.

 

3. Hugh Jackman: The relationship

Jackman starred alongside Deborra-Lee Furness in the drama ABC Correlli, 1995. On the show, Jackman met Deb for the first time, and they both fell in love with each other. Jackman designed the wedding ring for Furness by himself, on which was carved the Sanskrit inscription “Om paramar mainamar” which means “we dedicate our harmony to a greater new beginning”.

 

In an interview, Hugh talked about the day he met Deb, “I was in the same car with Deb incidentally. She turned and introduced herself to me from the front seat: “Hello, I’m Deborra-Lee, nice to meet you.” And then i knew that I like this girl.” 

Deb has a rule in their marital life: “Never been more than two weeks apart”. In fact, they had never been more than two weeks apart. They have always tried to keep that.

Deborra and Hugh dreamed of having a baby. But unfortunately, after Deb had miscarriages twice, the couple later decided to adopt Ava Eliot Jackman (Daughter) and Oscar Maximilian Jackman (Son).

 

4. Hugh Jackman: Breakthrough with X-Men

Jackman had his groundbreaking role playing Wolverine in the X-Men produced in the year (2000).

X-Men was a superhero movie based on the story of a group of mutants, with superhuman powers which made them not trust ordinary people.

The role was originally written for Russel Crowe, who proposed Jackman instead. Jackman said that his wife used to advise him to refuse the role, because she found it “ridiculous”. Jackman had to study wolves to develop his character, as he thought Wolverine alluded to wolves. In the end, X-Men succeeded at the box office, earning $296 million. The role earned a big Saturn award for best actor.
